Valley Mirror by StevenDavisPhoto Valley Mirror by StevenDavisPhoto
The Badwater Basin in Death Valley. Usually at this time of year there is no water and you get these cool shapes out in the dried up lake bed from the salt deposits, but this year due to recent rains, the area was covered in 3-5 inches of standing water. It was actually a blessing because there was a mind-blowing sunset and the super still reflections made everything look like a mirror. I was about 200 feet away from shore, out in the middle of the water with my waterproof hiking boots. It was so cool. This sunset was one of the best I've ever seen, and to see it in this kind of location was truly a blessing.

Stunning colours and lighting. The reflections and the salt pan patters under the water really make this an excellent composition.

This may be an awesome shot, but there's a reason park rangers placed a sign asking visitors not to enter the water. There's a species of nearly microscopic snail that lives only at badwater, and it isn't exactly doing well, even there.

I've been there a couple of times, and there had been a sign. I'm pretty sure it was on the edge of the little parking lot they have there, near the ramp down. However, that said, much of the park has been subject to vandalism and theft, so I wouldn't be entirely surprised if someone did something like steal the sign. I've seen weirder things. (For example, somewhere in the mountains in the park there is an old porcelain tub filled with blue glass marbles. No clue why, just stumbled on it one day)

That would probably explain it, then. Sorry about going off like that. After rains like the whole state was getting this winter, Death Valley probably had an absolutely stunning wildflower bloom this year, too.

Awesome shot, Steven!!!! :highfive: I have been to Death Valley many years ago and the scenery is very beautiful out there, but at the same time, very hot and dry.

I've seen other images with the salt basin covered by water but nothing quite this colorfull. I never would have guessed Death Valley. Nice shot.

Dude, Oachs wasn't kidding. It seems it was spectacular all around... Love the cloud porn! Also, the foreground is nicely chosen lines up very well with the shape of the underwater salt flat! Killer image, Steve-O!
